On 29 July 2010, it was announced that Jafar Kazemi's death sentence had been upheld by Iran's Supreme Court and sent to enforcement. Please write immediately to save his life. We have updated our sample letter to reflect the news.

On 30 April 2010, Amnesty International released an Urgent Action Alert regarding Ja'far Kazemi, a death-row prisoner in Iran believed to be at risk of imminent execution, and Mohammad Ali Haj Aghaei, tried at the same hearing and on similar charges. A report released the same day by ICHRI states that Mohammad Aghaei has likewise been sentenced to death. Please write to the following officials using regarding these two cases (please refer to Ja’far Kazemi as "Ja’far Kazemi, son of Bahman" in your appeals, as this will help the authorities to identify him) as follows. You can use our sample letter or write your own:

- Asking for an immediate stay of execution in Ja’far Kazemi and Mohammad Ali Haj Aghaei’s cases;

- Urging the authorities to commute all death sentences in Iran, including any imposed in connection with the post-election protests;

- Reminding the Iranian authorities that the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which Iran is a state party, states that the death penalty can only be carried out for “the most serious crimes”, which the Human Rights Committee has clarified must be “intentional crimes with lethal or other extremely grave consequences."

Your Excellency,

I am writing with regards to Ja’far Kazemi, son of Bahman, and Mohammad Ali Haj Aghaei, two men currently on death row in Iran. On 29 July, it was announced that Ja'far's sentence has been upheld by the Supreme Court and sent to enforcement, and he is believed to be in danger of imminent execution.

Ja’far was arrested on September 18, 2009 in connection with the post-election protests and, though not accused of any violent act, was sentenced to death for “Moharebeh” and “propaganda about the system.” Mohammad Ali Haj Aghaei was tried in the same trial and on similar charges and recent reports indicate that he has been sentenced to death as well.

Iran is a signatory to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which states that the death penalty can only be carried out for “the most serious crimes”, which the Human Rights Committee has clarified must be “intentional crimes with lethal or other extremely grave consequences." Furthermore, he has had limited access to a lawyer, in direct violation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), to which Iran is a signatory, which guarantees defendants access to legal counsel and a "fair and public hearing by a competent, independent and impartial tribunal" (Articles 14 and 10).

Given the above, I request that any imminent execution for Ja’far Kazemi or Mohammad Ali Haj Aghaie be halted and both their death sentences be commuted at once, together with those of any other death-row prisoners sentenced in connection with the post-election protests or other non-violent activism.

Yours sincerely,
